Carbon materials are omni-present in a wide range of industrial sectors – e.g. coke, anthracite, graphite materials. An important measure of quality for virtually all carbonaceous materials is their particle size distribution which, given the applications of such materials, also represents a critical safety aspect. Therefore, dedicated inspection requirements exist for carbonaceous materials with particular focus on screening analysis used to determine the distribution of particle sizes from 0,063 to 30 millimeters which is defined in DIN 51938 (Testing of carbonaceous materials - Determination of particle size distribution by sieving - Solid matters). Results from the screening analysis are used to evaluate granular carbonaceous materials for further processing to finished products.

According to DIN 51938, the determination of particle size distribution in carbonaceous materials with grain sizes predominantly under 10 millimeters shall be conducted with a set of 200 mm ⌀ laboratory test sieves conforming with ISO 3310.
