The obligatory reference check procedure for manufacturers of gypsum binders, plaster and dry mortar is defined in EN 13279-2 which, under Point 4.1, demands sieving analysis as the method for the determination of grain dispersity which is of particular importance for the classification of the products according to the quality classes outlined in national and international standards.

The mandatory quality control procedure defined in EN 13279 requires the following laboratory test sieves in accordance with ISO 565:

  • 5.000 µm (5,0 mm) for gypsum-based masonry mortar (C2) [Gypsum-Mortar for special purposes]
  • 200 and 100 µm for gypsum plaster for fibrous reinforcement [C1: Gypsum Plaster for fibrous reinforcement & C7: Finishing product]
  • 1.500 µm (1,5 mm) for reinforced plaster and thin-coat plaster [C1: Gypsum Plaster for fibrous reinforcement & C6: Thin-coat plaster / finishing product]

The types and quality classification of Fill-, Fine- and Joint-Plaster are defined in EN 13963 (Jointing materials for gypsum boards - Definitions, requirements and test methods). This standard differentiates between four types of joint plaster materials, whereas analysis of grain dispersity is to be carried out for Types 2B, 3B and 4B using a pair of test sieves. For a product to be classified under these categories, it must comply with the following criteria:

  • No material remains on a 315 µm Woven Wire Cloth Sieve (100% throughput)
  • The material left on a 200 µm Woven Wire Cloth Sieve can be at most 1% of the sieved sample

Requirements for Gypsum based adhesives for gypsum blocks are defined in EN 12860 which specifies that a sieving analysis is to be carried out to determine the maximum grain size within the product. (Gypsum based adhesives for gypsum blocks - Definitions, requirements and test methods; German version EN 12860:2001 + AC:2002). For a product to comply with this standard, it must fulfil the following criteria:

  • No material remains on a 400 µm Woven Wire Cloth Sieve (100% throughput)
  • The material left on a 200 µm Woven Wire Cloth Sieve can be at most 10% of the sieved sample

Blau-Metall manufactures test sieves suitable for the determination of maximum grain sizes in gypsum and mortar products, compliant with the applicable technical standards and manufactured with ease of use and screening accuracy in mind. Our rigorous optical inspection protocol ensures our sieves meet all requirements of ISO 3310 and deliver a statistically sound screening result.
